Welcome to our Website – Arthritis and Rheumatism Association of Malta VO/0425
Finally after six long years, our association has realized another dream: the setting up of our website. From the very beginning of the association’s formation, this has been one of our main objectives. However due to financial constraints we never had the opportunity to achieve this aim.
With the launch of the ‘Small Incentive Scheme’ to help all NGOs, by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, our association managed to qualify for a grant, placing first among 134 Organisations.
Thanks to this Scheme, funds have now been made available to set up our long awaited website. A very big thank you goes to our web master Mr Fredrick Muscat who has worked hard so that the website could be launched on World Arthritis Day 2013.
We do hope that you find our website interesting, helpful and informative regarding Arthritis and RMDs. Our aim is to bring you all the information, education and support needed. We hope that you will find this website useful, whether you want information about Arthritis and RMDs or more specific information about ARAM and its activites.
Enjoy!
Mary Vella
The President.
The Edgar Stene competition is organised by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) and involves writing an essay on a particular topic to do with living with a rheumatic condition. It was set up in honour of the late Edgar Stene who suffered from severe ankylosing spondylitis and was a great promoter of co-operation between doctors, patients and community workers.
This year the essay title is:
“Vision 2043 – my ideal world for people with a rheumatic or
musculoskeletal disease”
The essay should be about changes you would like to see to improve the lives and to create a better world for people with RMDs in the future. These changes could include social attitudes, health and social care, the environment, travel and work opportunities. Some changes will take longer to come about than others, so the deadline is set up for our vision for a better future in the year 2043. This competition will provide many inspiring visions for what life could look like for people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases by 2043.
People with a rheumatic or musculoskeletal disease (minimum 16 years of age), are encouraged to submit an essay not exceeding 2 pages of A4 (Arial 12 point, single line space, adequate frames) in Maltese or English e-mailed to aramalta@gmail.com by 31st December 2013. The winner will be announced by the 15th March 2014, by the EULAR jury.
The Stene Prize winner will be awarded €2000 and invited to attend the Opening Plenary Session of the EULAR Congress in Paris on 11th June 2014. EULAR provides the winner with travel to Paris and hotel accommodation in Paris for up to 4 nights as well as an invitation to the Congress Dinner.
2013 winner was Mette Toft of Denmark, with the title “Growing up or growing older – my secret for healthy ageing with a rheumatic or musculoskeletal disease”. You can read and see the style of her winning essay by going to website: http://www.eular.org/ clicking on Awards and choosing the Edgar Stene award.

Abbott Laboratories, represented by VJ Salomone Pharma, have teamed up with ARAM, the National Association for Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis, to organise a workshop themed ‘Heart to Heart’.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis crafted heart-shaped decorative cushions which were then donated to the young patients of Puttinu Cares at the Rainbow Ward at Mater Dei Hospital last month following a rheumatology conference.
Prof. Carmel Mallia, consultant rheumatologist and honorary president of ARAM, chaired the meeting along with president Mary Vella. Honorary guests included Marios Kouloumas, chair of the EULAR Standing Committee of People with Arthritis/Rheumatism in Europe, committee members Joe Camilleri, president of the Commission for People with Disability, and Marion Rizzo, CEO of Mater Dei Hospital.
This initiative was carried out as part as an international campaign by Abbott Laboratories to promote and implement the company’s key core values, which are pioneering, achieving, caring and enduring.
